Spider-Man: Far From Home Director Wants Kraven As Next Villain
Jon Watts has next Spidey villain in his sights.
When it comes to Spider-Man’s legendary rogues gallery, we all have our own personal favourites who we’ve been dying for Spidey to battle on the big screen. One such villain is Kraven the Hunter, and it looks like Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts is similarly a fan of this particular foe of ol’ Web-head’s.
Speaking to Uproxx about which classic Spider-Man villain he’d like to put up against Tom Holland’s Wall-crawler in the inevitable Far From Home follow-up, Watts enthused, “Oh, I would love Kraven. It’s just the trick of how do you do Kraven in a movie?”
At one point in time, avid Spider-Man fans thought that we may actually get to see Sergei Kravinoff introduced in Spider-Man: Far From Home. That all came about due to the casting of Numan Acar, who is an actor that has a striking resemblance to the comic book Kraven. As it happens, Acar’s role in the movie was that of Dimitri, who is shown to be working alongside Nick Fury and Maria Hill. Still, in the comics, Kraven’s brother Dmitri was the no-good, face-swapping Chameleon…
In terms of Kraven’s history, he debuted back in 1964’s Amazing Spider-Man #15 and would go on to become one of Peter Parker’s most beloved villains – even being a member of the original incarnation of The Sinister Six. A master huntsman with extreme senses and predatory skills, Kraven sees Spider-Man as the ultimate trophy kill.
To this day, comic book fans will regularly sing the praises of J.M. DeMatteis’ 1987 Kraven’s Last Hunt arc when talking about the greatest ever Spider-Man stories. In that tale, Kraven manages to do the unthinkable and kill Spider-Man. Going a step further, Kravinoff dons his own Spider-Man outfit and goes about capturing criminals so that he can prove to himself that he is better than the now-totally-dead Spidey. Of course, Spider-Man wouldn’t actually be all that dead, yet Kraven didn’t care. Having deemed himself the victor of his final battle with Spider-Man, Kraven committed suicide as he deemed that he had nothing left to prove.
The last we’d heard about Kraven on the silver screen was that Sony was looking to give the character his own movie as part of Sony’s shared Spider-Verse of films that began life with last year’s Venom and will continue with the Jared Leto-headlined Morbius the Living Vampire last this year.
