Visual effects are an extremely important part of just about any superhero movie: get it right and you get Guardians of the Galaxy, but screw it up and you end up with the garish Green Lantern.

While it would be ridiculous to say that the movie's effects are bad, there are definitely areas where it could be much, much better. For instance, the opening cam footage of Spidey in the Civil War fight looks cheaply thrown together, more closely resembling a video game cut-scene than a sequence from a $175 million movie.

The finale also gives way to perhaps the most common comic book movie flaw, of indulging its effects palette too much to the point where the action feels more assaultive and exhausting than enjoyable.

At least there wasn't a giant beam in the sky though, right?
