Even with the benefit of hindsight revealing that everyone was actually right about Zendaya's Michelle being MJ, the reveal at the end of the film was still a great little moment. And if you think that it matters that she's completely unrecognisable from the "traditional" iterations we've seen before of Peter's most enduring love, you've got issues.

Zendaya's sardonic, whip-smart nihilist is a breath of fresh air - precisely because of her disaffection towards Peter (and all of high-school life) and the buried but heart-warming message that outsiders can find a community that brings them out of themselves (if they want). In short, she's great and it's even better that we'll see more of her.

There's still some debate about whether she's actually MJ, but the fact that the reveal was framed as a big twist (and that lingering look suggesting she like likes Peter) suggests that cynicism is entirely wrong-headed. She's MJ, whether she's a new interpretation or not.
