If Chris Pine was a great pick for the carved out of wood, blond Peter Parker, Jake Johnson was born for the role of the slightly doughy, down and out loser that crosses into Miles’ dimension. That’s not to do Johnson a disservice; he’s a great comedic actor. But this Spidey is basically if Nick from New Girl got bitten by a radioactive spider.

After seeing Maguire, Garfield and Holland tackle the role in the last 20 years or so, this Peter Parker needed to be different. If it felt like we’d seen him before, he’d have gotten lost in the eccentric clutter Into The Spider-Verse wrought. Give him a downtrodden vibe and slap some sweatpants on him though, and we get a great take on a classic character.

In such a large cast, it’s Peter and Miles who get most of the focus, with Gwen featuring sporadically too. That means as well as the laughs, he needs to be able to carry the story. Though his parting line is played a little too straight and comes off a bit schmaltzy, all in all there’s credible emotion between himself and Miles, allowing the audience to connect with them.
