Though it was strongly suspected that Maguire and Garfield would appear in the movie, absolutely nobody could've predicted the way they were introduced, with the two multiverse heroes casually strolling through a magic portal opened by Ned.

It's a really fun scene, but the original version was much, much different.

Even when principal photography started, the plan was to introduce the two previous Spider-Men immediately after the death of Aunt May, with a certain Marvel character bringing them to Holland's Peter and going "here are the saving graces!"

"It was just more of a deus ex machina," McKenna told Variety.

The two writers didn't specify which Marvel character brought them to Peter, though given his involvement in the film, Doctor Strange seems like a safe bet.

This introduction scene was still in place by Christmas 2020, until the decision was made to improve it, resulting in the portal scene featured in the finished cut.
