Spider-Woman: 10 Things You Need To Know Before Her Movie

5. She's Been A Hero...And A Villain

Spider-Woman Alex Ross
Marvel Comics

Upon awakening, Spider-Woman was manipulated and brainwashed by HYDRA into becoming one of their agents, and she's even depicted on the cover of her first Marvel Comics appearance - Marvel Spotlight #32 - attacking S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury.

Ultimately, she would see the error of her ways and became a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, but with both agencies part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony Pictures will have to come up with something new.

Spider-Woman's status as both a hero and villain is an interesting one, though, especially as Brian Michael Bendis' New Avengers run would see her outed as a double agent for the two warring factions. Later, we would learn that she had been replaced by the Skrull Queen Veranke as part of Secret Invasion, and while that's unlikely to be adapted, it could inform how Jessica is portrayed.

Making her an anti-hero and not a traditional superhero might make for far more interesting viewing, though it will obviously be important for Olivia Wilde to make Spider-Woman someone we can root for.
