Star Trek: 10 Best 'I'm Dead And I Know It' Moments

3. Captain Kirk - Star Trek: Generations

Star Trek: Generations has aged a lot better than many expected on its release. For a film that deals with death as heavily as the seventh Trek adventure, it manages to balance the light and the dark, for the most part. Though his role in the film is all-too-brief, one of the true stand-out scenes is William Shatner's final words as Captain James T. Kirk.

This scene works as well as it does because of the years of history behind Star Trek. Kirk is a legendary name, both on-screen and off. Therefore, having him die in this movie was a huge gamble, one that not everyone believed paid off. But credit where credit is due, Shatner absolutely nails this scene.

Having just plummeted down a ravine thanks to the actions of Dr. Soran, Kirk lies dying under the rubble. Picard finds him, but there is nothing to be done. Kirk smiles, asking if they had made a difference. He assures Picard that it was fun, then his face falls.

'Oh my,' he says, as he sees death extending a hand to him. Then Kirk, the first great captain in Star Trek, dies. It's a moment that is written beautifully, acted wonderfully, and, thematically, hands the baton from the Original Series to The Next Generation.
