2. Young Kirk Joyriding - Star Trek (2009)
J.J. Abrams did many things to destroy everything that was special about Star Trek: its like he got off on doing it or something. It was a show he never liked, after all, and what better way to satisfy the sadist in him than annoy the legions of Trekkies but taking liberties with the franchise they love. One of the most irritating scenes in Star Trek 2009 is where a young James T. Kirk steals a car and drives it off a cliff in Iowa. Not only are there no canyons in Iowa, but this attempt at establishing that Kirk is a rebel shows us that beyond the character, he doesn't understand the Kirk character at all. Everything from the annoying kid, the Beastie Boys track and the Nokia product placement is irritating to watch. And then Abrams has the car fly off a cliff whilst Kirk performs a gravity-defying jump to safety. Throughout that scene, all I'm ever left thinking is that the young Kirk is a little s**t. He stole a really nice car and drove it off a cliff. Am I supposed to applaud him for such behavior? Am I supposed to think that he is really cool for doing it? Nope, he just seems like an idiot - something that he carries into his alternative reality older self, as played by Chris Pine.
