Star Trek: 10 Things You Didn't Know About General Chang

4. A Hero Of The Empire

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's fifth season opener, Apocalypse Rising, Worf, Sisko, O'Brien, and Odo sneak aboard Ty'Gokor, where Chancellor Gowron is due to induct new warriors into the Order of the Bat'leth. Dotted around the Hall of Warriors are statues of various heroes of the Empire and, though barely visible, General Chang is amongst them.

Though he was almost directly responsible for the murder of Gorkon and the continuation of hostilities between the Empire and the Federation, set designer John Eaves decided to include him. Deeming his other deeds and service worthy of having him stood next to Kahless the Unforgettable.

It does seem odd that his statue would be left in place after the revelations of his crimes, though it suggests that the Klingon Empire is selective when it comes to its history books. This is further alluded to throughout Deep Space Nine, causing Ezri Dax to comment that, by the close of the Dominion War, the Empire had grown old and was far too concerned with keeping up appearances than effecting radical change. Chang's presence in the Hall supports this theory.
