Given the recent news that
Star Trek Into Darkness director JJ Abrams has officially boarded a cargo ship to a galaxy far, far away, it's likely that
Star Trek 3 will have to find its future director elsewhere. Sure, there's a slight possibility that once
Star Wars: Episode VII is all wrapped up, Abrams will return to Paramount to helm another chapter in his recently rebooted franchise. The likelihood, though? That the third in the series will fall to somebody else, and Abrams will look on and contribute from a producing position. With that in mind, here's our choices for 10 directors who we feel could successfully replace JJ Abrams for
Star Trek 3. Beam them up, Scotty (sorry - couldn't resist).
10. Ben Affleck
Why He Should: The once ridiculed actor and former
Gigli-star has had a a truly inspirational Hollywood turnaround since he decided to take his career, you know,
seriously. Yes, these days Ben Affleck - who recently won a Best Director Golden Globe Award - is certainly a Hollywood player to be reckoned with. Thus far, he's had a near flawlessly-executed run of movies in
Gone Baby Gone, The Town and
Argo. Who'd have thought? Though gritty crime dramas seem to be Ben Affleck's calling, he's confirmed himself to be a director with natural storytelling chops. And though you'd be forgiven for thinking that Affleck isn't in to things like
Star Trek, he's actually a huge fan of nerdy pop culture artifacts, including
Star Wars and Stephen King's
Dark Tower series.
Why He Shouldn't: There's no evidence to suggest that Affleck has a flare for movies built with CGI and technical jargon. Though he'd assuredly make it tense and confident, it's possible that the film would lack a certain big-budget visual flair.
Overall Probability: 2/10
