2. New Potential Directors
With Abrams helming Star Wars VII, the directing chair for Star Trek 3 has become vacant. Speculation is high on who will fill it and some of the name been thrown around are Jo Cornish (Attack The Block) Brad Bird (
Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol) and Bryan Singer. However, the man at the forefront and being tipped for the job is Jon Chu, director of Step Up and G.I Joe: Retaliation. Paramount is keen to use him because he is the man who saved G.I Joe. Yes he did make a GI.Joe movie that was watchable, but it was hardly film of the year. If Star Trek was just about a collection soulless action scenes, filmed in front of a green screen, I might be excited about Jon Chus potential appointment. But for those who want Star Trek to move back to having a little more cerebral substance to compliment the action, they will see Chu as another director that will focus on the explosions and not much else. Paramount is being very shortsighted with Star Trek; they see it as a way to make lots of money fast but dont care very much about ten years down the line. In the same way they pump out summer filler like G.I Joe, they now see Star Trek in the same vane. They want a director that can deliver a spectacle that attracts box office receipts. The other stuff like a good story and interesting characters are not what brings in the crowds. They want explosions and fighting and that is something Chu can give them.
