1. Joss Whedon
This man is behind Buffy, Dollhouse and Firefly. He also co-wrote Toy Story. Honestly, he did. And of course, he is the genius behind The Avengers. The third highest-grossing film of all time at the time of writing. He is a cult hero in every sense, and his terrifying rise to prominence has been a slow steady march of the kind to rival Genghis Khan or the Roman Empire. Of course, The Avengers sequel will no doubt take up Whedon's time for the next two years, but a boy can dream. Joss Whedon and JJ Abrams between them seem intent on exploding fanboys heads around the world, so why not put one more feather in the cap by placing Whedon in the director's chair for Star Trek III? He would certainly be an incredibly safe pair of hands, and his blend of humour, drama and action would be perfect for the job at hand. Hollywood executives can be pretty dense as we all know, but this is the closest thing to a safe bet they could get. Of course, there are other able directors out there. So sound off in the comments below about your personal favourites for the job, no matter how obscure. And let's hope that the third Star Trek will be in good hands no matter who ends up taking this franchise to boldly go somewhere it hasn't gone before. (Sorry, couldn't resist).
