3. Kirk & Bones Share A Drink
A brief but memorable scene early on sees Bones joining Kirk for a drink. Kirk is drinking some mulch they snagged from a random planet, and Bones classes things up by presenting him with some quality scotch he swiped from Chekov's locker.
As Bones brings up Kirk's impending birthday, he confesses that he doesn't like thinking about it as it reminds him of his dad's death on the very same day, and he'll now be one year older than his dad ever was. Bones then tells him that, as much as he wants to figure out who his dad was, he can't neglect himself either.
Much like Spock's introspective moments later on, this provides some terrific insight into Kirk as a character, adding a dimension of psychology that audiences weren't necessarily expecting while avoiding trite soap opera drama. It turns out Bones is one hell of a listener...
