Star Trek Beyond: 10 Things It Did Better Than J.J. Abrams
8. The Performances Are Much Improved
In Star Trek Beyond, Chris Pine is Captain James T. Kirk, instead of an irritating frat-boy who happened to share the same name.
It took them three movies, two directors and
handful of writers, but they finally got his characters right. In Star Trek
Beyond, Captain Kirk is played with conviction, maturity and restraint; he doesn’t
get into fights on the bridge, and he isn’t cracking wise every few seconds. He’s
even got a more appropriate haircut.
In fact, most of the cast have rained in their performances considerably, and the characters themselves seem to have been written with more care and attention. Chris Pine in particular is much improved, but pretty much every performance has been upped. The only exception might be Zachary Quinto who still doesn’t fully embody the character of Spock, which isn’t too surprising given that he has the most difficult task of following in the shoes of Leonard Nimoy.
