Sydney class ships have a long service period in Starfleet. They entered into service in the 23rd century, serving both as transport and executive shuttles. One such ship was the USS Jenolan. The Sydney class were named for the Australian city, while the Jenolan was named for the popular tourist attraction - Jenolan Caves.

The ship was similar in design to the executive shuttle that had been in service around Spacedock, though with larger and faster engines. It had several decks, with the bridge module up the front. While the ship was not designed for combat, it was designed for speed. Geordi La Forge believed that a Sydney class vessel would run rings around the much larger Galaxy class vessel at sublight speeds.

The design remained in service into the 2370s, with the USS Nash still in service around Deep Space Nine. The class was also to serve as inspiration for the Danube class, though eventually this idea was scrapped.
