Star Trek Into Darkness: 5 Reasons John Harrison Is Greatest Ever Trek Villain
Now that the reviews of Star Trek Into Darkness are hitting the web ahead of next week's UK release of the film, it's clear that JJ Abrams has created something boldly entertaining, if slightly flawed, and though fans won't enjoy it as much as the first, it is a strong sequel nevertheless. The high-points are numerous: the action is gripping, the emotional sequences poignant and occasionally devastating, and Chris Pine offers a very strong performance as Kirk in a film that threatens frequently to bill him second to his own second in command, as well as a new nemesis. And it is that nemesis - Benedict Cumberbatch's John Harrison - who is the highest of all the high-points. He is, without a shadow of a doubt, the finest single Star Trek villain ever committed to screens. Let's consider the contenders: Q is iconic, but he was never explored enough (hopefully a new film will embrace him as a character); the Borg queen was never quite the culmination of her species; Lore was a pleasant distraction and Kruge was a little pantomimey. Only Khan could ever really offer a serious claim to being the greatest single villain in the Trek universes (whole species don't count.) So how does Harrison claim the title...?
