Star Trek: Ranking Every Starfleet Uniform Worst To Best

7. Star Trek: The Original Series

It's hard not to put these at the top and call it a day. William Ware Theiss's Starfleet uniforms seen throughout the bulk of Star Trek: The Original Series (and later The Animated Series) are the most distinctive, recognizable costumes in the franchise and even television history.

More than Theiss' original "The Cage" uniforms, these are the costumes that inspired countless variations that Star Trek (and Starfleet) adopted through the decades with their bold primary color shirts paired with black trousers. Theiss' own costumes from Star Trek: The Next Generation are heavily inspired by these uniforms as are all of the costumes worn in the Kelvin Timeline Trilogy and now in Star Trek: Discovery.

However, Theiss' TOS uniforms, intentionally designed to reject a militaristic future, are responsible for the "space pajamas" thing that has haunted the franchise ever since. And while these are undoubtedly the most famous, archetypical Starfleet uniforms in the franchise, they paved the way for numerous creative and ultimately superior riffs on this classic design.
