6. Star Trek (2009)
After the disaster that was Star Trek: Nemesis, Paramount needed to do something to breathe life back into the franchise. They eventually turned to an idea that had been pitched decades ago - have a movie featuring Kirk and Spock in the Academy. They found a talented young cast, got one of the top geeks in the world (J.J. Abrams) to direct, and what do you get? The single best Star Trek film for over a decade. It tells the story of Spock (in the future) accidentally traveling back in time and being pursued by angry Romulans seeking revenge. They presume Spock was responsible for the destruction of their home world, when in fact he was attempting to save it. While hiding out on a frozen planet, a young James T. Kirk stumbles across him and learns of... well, everything. Using this knowledge he is able to take control of the Enterprise and defeat the Romulans, though not in time to save the planet Vulcan from destruction.
The Good: The film brilliantly sets up a parallel universe that is no longer tied down by trying to fit in with the established continuity while simultaneously paying homage to it. Plus, it's great seeing Kirk as a young arrogant captain once more.
The Bad: Many fans were outraged by the establishment of the parallel universe. Just thought I'd pop that in there for balance.
The Ugly: You want me to say "lens flare" but I won't. I refuse. Oh crud, I did say it. Fine! It's lens flare! Are you happy?
