Star Wars: 10 Actors' Roles That Ruin Their Classic Character
1. Alec Guinness Is A Slimy Thief - The Ladykillers
Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi was the perfect film mentor; knowledgeable, kind and above all else patient enough to deal with A New Hope’s greatest menace, the shrill teenage angst of one Luke Skywalker. From the way he looks to his choice of words, from the moment he appears on screen you are given the unshakeable impression that this mysterious old hill hermit is a man to be trusted.
The same cannot be said for an earlier role played by the renowned thespian, in which he inhabits the slimy skin of one Professor Marcus in the 1955 version of The Ladykillers. A polar opposite to Star Wars’ space faring sage in almost every aspect, the good professor is a scheming pseudo-intellectual with no qualms about planning the murder of a helpless old woman.
It’s almost hard to watch Guinness so effortlessly embody this larcenous trickster without beginning to question his saintly portrayal of Obi-Wan. Did he secretly feel a devilish glee when his young, inexperienced apprentice was rough-housed in a seedy tavern or shot by his sadistic sphere? Can he be trusted not to use his ghost powers for sinister purposes? (Seriously, he was alone in the desert for quite a long time).
Well done Sir Alec Guinness, CH, CBE – your early work makes me question the morals of an upstanding celibate space knight.
