Star Wars: 10 Expanded Universe Starships You Didn't Know Were Canon Again
6. IG-2000
A name familiar to fans of IG-88 – the skinny droid bounty hunter of The Empire Strikes Back fame – IG-2000 is a starfighter unique in Star Wars lore as being a ship both piloted and designed by a droid.
Formally designated the Aggressor Assault Fighter, the craft was fast, boasting an ion engine stolen from a Nebulon-B frigate, and owing to the fact that IG-88, being mechanical, could shrug off G-forces that would kill an organic pilot, exceptionally agile.
There was also more than one. The IG-88 who appeared in Empire was the ‘B’ model, one of four identical droids labelled A through D. In the EU, models B through D took part in a famous gambit to steal the carbonite-imprisoned Han Solo from Boba Fett. The plan was to use a decoy IG-2000 to distract Fett while the real IG-2000 launched a surprise attack, but Fett escaped the snare, destroying IG-2000 and reducing the droid quattro to a trio.
The ship is also unusual in that unlike other entries on this list, where the EU origins were changed or re-imagined, IG-2000 survived intact, appearing essentially unchanged in an IG-88 themed issue of the IDW comic Star Wars Adventures.
