9. Familiar Leaders

Providing a satisfying piece of connective tissue to the much-loved Original Trilogy that would proceed it, Gareth Edwards and the gang had the brilliant brainwave to infuse unused footage from A New Hope to bring a few members of the Rebel Alliance's familiar flight crew back into the cinematic action.

Both Gold and Red Leaders, played by Angus MacInnes and the late Drewe Henley, respectively, soar onto the scene during Rogue one's deeply compelling climactic space battle over Scarif, yet it was another member of these two well-known squadrons that made the biggest impression in the end.

After being dramatically gunned down by a TIE Fighter in the conflict, Red 5 is ultimately no more and paves the way for none other than Luke Skywalker to take up the position in the squad by the time A New Hope rockets into play in the immediate aftermath of this pulsating skirmish.

Neither moment steals the show as the flashiest of Easter Eggs, but sprinkling some OG footage and foreshadowing into a film that had already successfully combined modern filmmaking technology and storytelling with the all-round "feeling" that was conjured up in those Original Trilogy offerings acted as the icing on this inter-galactic cake.
