While more than a few welcome enhancements and improvements have been made to the most iconic antagonist in the galaxy's iconic suit over the years, Gareth Edwards opted for a more intriguing route when the time came to reintroduce a very much worn-in Dark Lord of the Sith.

Clearly seeing his fair share of action in the time since Revenge of the Sith's unveiling of his shiny new, and expectedly rigid, attire, Edwards rolled out a very much battered and duller looking Vader at times as he transitioned into the incoming tales of the Original Trilogy.

After all, the Vader first seen stalking onto the scene in A New Hope very much comes equipped with a dinted and smudged up variation of his armour. So, it only made sense to have him decked out in this more weathered version for his massacring of some poor rebels in that emphatic Rogue One conclusion.

Yet, while the suit was generally designed to match up with its A New Hope counterpart, VFX supervisor and executive producer John Knoll would also shed more compelling light on the thought that went into Rogue One's Vader suit direction in general:

"I figure he’s got more than one version of those outfits. The reason the armor looks a little grungier and dented up in A New Hope is you’re not going to wear your nice armor into battle. You’re gonna wear your beater armor into battle. Then, if you’re going to go talk to the Emperor or something, you put on the nice shiny one, show some respect."
