Star Wars isnt exactly known for high quality video games that not only are well regarded, but stand the test the time. Games such as Rogue Squadron, Battlefront II or The Force Unleashed are exceptions rather than the rule, but, though it is over a decade old now, Knights of the Old Republic is one of the best selling X-Box games in their entire library, becoming a stepping stone to many of the current generation RPG games today. Aside from the gameplay, the storyline was also praised along with the timeframe set within the game, taking place 4000 years before both trilogies at the height of the Sith Empires power. KOTOR was a shocking shift away from the regular Star Wars universe fans knew and loved as they explored a dramatically altered landscape; the Jedi headquarters was not placed on Coruscant and the Sith, rather than following the Rule of Two, were thousands in number, going so far as to have their own academy. A film based on Knights of the Old Republic, or the online multiplayer RPG The Old Republic, would be an excellent choice for a standalone film as it would give the filmmakers a significant amount of creative freedom to make a film truly separate from the each trilogy. The vast amount of potential Knights of the Old Republic has to transition to film is hard to ignore, especially as it could focus on the origins of the millennia-long feud between the Jedi and Sith.
