Star Wars: 10 Reasons The Galactic Empire Wasn't As Bad As Everyone Thinks

1. It Was Necessary To Fight The Yuuzhan Vong

The Yuuzhan Vong invasion was probably the biggest disaster ever to befall the galaxy €“ a large number of planets were destroyed and almost 365 trillion deaths caused by the conflict. The Jedi were almost completely wiped out once again and it left a lasting impression, leading to more far reaching consequences in the future such as the fall of Jacen Solo. The war showed how unprepared and ill-equipped the New Republic was for dealing with such an attack. However other expanded universe sources have shown that the Emperor was aware, at least to some extent, of the existence of the Vong and that part of his desire to create the Empire was in order to be better able to cope with the threat. Many of the things Palpatine brought about under the Empire were an ever-increasing Imperial Navy and the development of super weapons like the Death Star. Imagine how much better defended against the Yuuzhan Vong would have been with such a strong force, compared to the largely donated New Republic Defence Fleet. In light of the fact that the Emperor knew the Yuuzhan Vong were heading for the galaxy it is much more understandable why he committed the actions he did. A strong Imperial Navy and technology such as the Death Star were the perfect tools to ward of the threat of extra-galactic invasion, making the Empire much harder to defeat than - something which the Yuuzhan Vong themselves admitted.
