Star Wars: 10 Starfighters We Never Got To See
4. Alpha-Class Xg-1 Star Wing
The XG-1 made its debut in the PC Game Star Wars: X-Wing back in 1993, a game that required floppy discs to load. To a certain audience out there, you might know floppy discs as 3-D printed versions of the save button on your computer... and not a lot else.
Much of what is known about the Alpha-Class XG-1 Star Wing comes from financial records kept during the time of the Galactic Civil War. While they were a formidable fighter, the loss of one such Star Wing was recorded as being a loss of 125,000 credits. The ship did not see much action outside of the skirmishes to restore the Republic and, bar the reports, it seems as though they may not have been cost-effective enough for mass production.
If there is one constant in the universe, it is the search for the most cost-effective weapons.
The ship somewhat resembled the Imperial Shuttles with its tri-wing design and cockpit. It could travel at lightspeed and was armed with twin ion canons, compression missiles and laser canons. It only required a crew of one and as such, it was not designed to be a long-term ship.
The XGs have appeared in many different games but haven't yet made it as far as the expanded universe, nor have they shown up on-screen.
