9. How Did Luke's Lightsaber Get There?
Of all the mysteries in The Force Awakens, none is more obviously lamp-shaded than the puzzle of how Luke Skywalker's lightsaber ended up in the murky basement of Maz's backwater ruin. Maz states outright the lightsaber's story is a tale for another time, and if that 'other time' isn't The Last Jedi there will be some very disappointed nerds come December.
Did Luke know Maz? Did he give her the lightsaber, did she steal it, did he lose it only for Maz to recover it, or did Luke fight in some kind of conflict on Takodana? There are no obvious answers for how the thing got there and yet it's given a prominent place in the movie that suggests it's supposed to be a major plot point later on.
Unless Luke's lightsaber is just a deeply lazy plot MacGuffin to kick off some equally cheap mental flashbacks from Rey, its presence in Maz's castle has to be satisfactorily explained.
