Star Wars: 10 Things You Never Knew About Obi-Wan Kenobi
9. He Protected Luke Throughout His Childhood
Ever wondered why Luke Skywalker was familiar with the name “Kenobi” after stumbling across Leia’s message in A New Hope? Luke was not certain who “Obi Wan” was but shared with R2-D2 and C-3PO that he knew of a strange hermit called “Old Ben”, and wondered if they had ever met.
In the Star Wars Marvel comics, released in 2015, Luke conveniently discovers Obi-Wan's journal, recounting Kenobi's exile on Tatooine and his attempts to safeguard Luke as a child. Having wanted to train young Skywalker, the boy's uncle, Owen Lars, disapproved and told the former Jedi General to stay away from his family, believing that Luke would turn out like his father if Obi-Wan were to play a part in his upbringing.
The seventh edition of the comic book series sees Obi-Wan keeping a watchful eye over Luke during The Great Drought. The boy attempted to take back water from Jabba the Hutt's Weequay Enforcers and was saved by an unseen Kenobi. Luke was carried back home and awoken the next morning, completely unaware of what happened.
But how did Luke know him as "Ben"? A Webtoons comic by Hong Jacga suggested a teenage Skywalker was once moments away from being torn to shreds by a krayt dragon but Ob-Wan arrived to slay the beast just in time. Upon asking his saviour who he was, the Jedi Knight responded “Ben Kenobi. You can call me Ben”.
