Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon held each other in high esteem and, despite the Student/Master dynamic, were very good friends. Regardless, the two didn't exactly see eye to eye throughout their relationship.

Set around eight years before the events of The Phantom Menace, Claudia Gray's canon novel, Master & Apprentice, uncovers more about their relationship. The pair differed in their philosophies. The Padawan was a practised follower of the Jedi Code, whilst his Master was devoted to following his conscience and will of the Living Force.

The book reveals that Qui-Gon actually shared his fascination of the history and prophecies of the Jedi with his Master, Count Dooku. They also possessed similar character traits: "self-reliance, skepticism, and a reluctance to take the Council’s word as sacred."

This was in direct opposition to Kenobi. The novel describes that the pair had "been an uneasy match from the start, with misunderstandings and emotional swings." That was most likely down to Obi-Wan being transferred to his Master at the age of thirteen. This was an issue Jinn sometimes questioned, as teenagers are at the age where "change becomes more difficult."

Both Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan would resolve their differences however, and it's doubtful Kenobi would've become as legendary a Jedi without his training under Jinn.
