3. Rey’s Parentage

Like Snoke, Rey was also the source of many fan theories prior to The Last Jedi’s release, with her parentage particularly scrutinised. The fact she is amazingly in tune with the force meant she was bound to be a Skywalker, Kenobi or even Jinn. And the really ambitious claimed she was none of them, instead a product born from the force much like Darth Vader himself.

However, it has since turned out that she is nobody. Nothing, as Kylo so brutally puts it. Rather than having force-gifted parents, she was simply born with the power. Many fans felt disappointed with this, believing accusing Rian Johnson of tinkering with hard, cold, Star Wars folklore.

Yet, again once you comprehend the truth, you can rewatch The Last Jedi and fully appreciate Rey’s character. It actually sends a powerful message to the audience that you can be a hero and source of inspiration and greatness regardless of where you come from. You can appreciate her for what she is – a scavenger from Jakku who has been born with a gift and fulfilled her need to be able to use it.

You, as a non-Jedi, may not ever be able to wield a lightsaber, but regardless of your past, you too can achieve anything if you commit yourself to it.

Sport and Film. I love them both. And I'm extremely lucky to write about two of my biggest passions in life. Most of the time, I'm at the Daily Express newspaper writing about football, tennis and F1. But, when I'm out of there, I let my imagination run wild and pen down my thoughts on the film series' I love. WhatCulture gives me the chance to write about the movie industry - an industry I really care about. And for that, I'm extremely grateful. And hope you, if you're reading this, enjoy what I think about stuff.
