Luke sensed a pull to the dark side in Ben Solo, his nephew and student, when Ben was a teenager. He confronted Ben while he slept, and raised his lightsaber, preparing to kill him. However, this rage only lasted a moment, and just as Luke hesitated, Ben woke up, saw his uncle turning on him, and was driven even further into darkness.

Even Luke admits that this was a moment of weakness, but his rash actions here led to so much destruction. Rather than discussing Ben's dark side tendencies with him after discovering them, Luke's first impulse was to cause harm to this poor boy. In doing so, Luke frightened Ben so much that he embraced the darkness, becoming Kylo Ren and joining the First Order to wreak havoc on the galaxy.

At this point, Luke represents the entire Jedi Order, so his actions represent all of the Jedi. In that case, all of the Jedi decided it was better to attack Ben Solo than try to reason with him - if but for a second.
