Star Wars: 7 Perfect Performances & 7 That Sucked
7 Star Wars Performances That Sucked
7. Benicio Del Toro As DJ (Sucked!)
That's right, Benicio Del Toro did appear in a Star Wars film, although you'd be forgiven if like many people, you had forgotten. When his casting was first announced, the internet was set alight with rumours about who the actor could be playing, with a popular fan theory being that Benicio would be an aged version of Ezra Bridger, a character from the animated series Star Wars Rebels. This turned out not to be the case and in Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi, Benicio gave the completely forgettable performance as DJ (standing for Don't Join, not because of his radio profession).
Like several others on this list, it seems like another case of a wildly talented actor being unfortunately miscast. DJ was a Han Solo-type rogue mixed with elements of a character you might find in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. Benicio played DJ with a strange stuttering voice which comes across as unintentionally funny more than anything. Although Del Toro has shown his comedic abilities before in films such as The Usual Suspects, here it doesn't quite work for him.
It also does not help Del Toro's case that DJ appeared in the heavily criticised 'Master Codebreaker' subplot from The Last Jedi that many viewers argue is by far the weakest portion of the film.
