Star Wars: 7 Perfect Performances & 7 That Sucked
6. Andy Serkis As Snoke
Andy Serkis is perhaps the most talented actor working today when it comes to Performance Capture Technology. He made a name for himself mainly from his roles in The Lord of the Rings and the Planet of the Apes trilogies. Serkis however, also has plenty of acting experience without performance capture, including his character Ulysses Klaue in Black Panther to name just one.
Therefore, it is no doubt that he is a phenomenally talented actor who pioneered the motion capture performance (after of course Ahmed Best did it first). Despite all of this, something just did not quite click for him as the Supreme Leader Snoke in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. First being introduced as a fairly mysterious character, the true identity of which was wildly speculated on by fans for years until he was revealed in fact to be just, Snoke.
If rumours are to be believed, the character of Snoke was not completely nailed down in The Force Awakens until fairly late in production, with some whispers even that they originally intended him to be female. Even the design of Snoke was ever-changing, so Serkis did not exactly know what character he was supposed to be performing. Perhaps due to this or other factors, Serkis' performance in The Force Awakens is painfully bland and generic; completely opposite to the style and charm brought to Emperor Palpatine by Ian McDiarmid. Rian Johnson took the character in new directions in The Last Jedi giving the Supreme Leader more personality and substance, but before Serkis truly got the chance to shine, Snoke was cut in half by apprentice, Kylo Ren.
