The Theory

Sometimes what you see is what you get and claims there is something deeper behind it are merely a case of The Emperor's New Clothes.

Supporting claims that the many internet Snoke theories are nothing more than this, Andy Serkis - the actor who plays the villain - previously told Entertainment Weekly that our Supreme Leader is a "new character".

"He’s a new character in this universe. It is very much a newly-introduced character. He’s aware of what’s gone on, in the respect that he has been around and is aware of prior events. I think it’d be fair to say that he is aware of the past to a great degree.”

How Credible Is It?

If the sequel trilogy is planning massive twist in which Snoke is outed as a ghost from Star Wars past, we can't blame Serkis for duping fans, but in this instance we'd say he's telling the truth.

Snoke as an original character with a yet-to-be-revealed connection to past characters and events is what makes the most sense based on the information we have to go off.
