The Last Jedi didn't deserve the flack it received for its handling of Luke Skywalker. Even the purest of heroes change over the course of several decades, especially when their most recent story is one of frustration and failure.

It rings true that Luke's faith in the Jedi and the Force was dented when the Emperor's death failed to bring lasting peace to the galaxy and his own nephew was consumed by the Dark Side. The fact he actually considered killing young Ben Solo, however, is more difficult to downplay.

Luke himself admits these feelings were "fleeting", but even so, the Jedi master should know from firsthand experience that even the most notorious of villains can return to the light. Mark Hamill's hero was literally the only person in the galaxy who believed Darth Vader could be redeemed.

Granted, Snoke had his hooks in Kylo Ren by this point, but the same was true of Vader and the Emperor. Both Anakin and his grandson have committed atrocities and have the same blood flowing in their veins, so what makes them different?

If there's one person who should have believed Kylo could be redeemed, it's Luke.
