Star Wars: 9 Unused Force Awakens Concepts That Need To Be Revisited

2. Luke€™s Dark Thoughts

In the early stages of development for The Force Awakens, there were some interesting ideas floating around regarding Luke Skywalker. In the end, we barely saw him in the film and none of them were used. But, as with any of the concept on this list, though, they could yet be revisited in Episode VIII or IX. Above you can see McCaig and Chiang€™s surreal image of Luke submerged in sand. This looks like it could have come from a dream sequence or vision, with the granules threatening to cover, entrap and suffocate the powerful Jedi Master. This has symbolic value, of course, since Luke€™s father's famous hatred of sand ultimately sent him down a dark path. And on the right hand side you can see Christian Alzmann€™s three-stage deconstruction of Luke, which sees him disintegrate from a bearded man in a cloak to a cloud of evil-looking smoke. Again, this could have come from a fantasy sequence that preyed on Luke€™s fears of descending to the Dark Side. After spending a whole film looking for him, it€™d be great to have a look inside Luke€™s psyche like this in Episode VIII. Maybe he could be taunted mentally by scary images such as these while he€™s trying to train Rey in the ways of the Force.
