Star Wars Episode 9: 15 Essential Rumours & Theories

5. Luke Might Only Have A Cameo

Despite dying in The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker will be back in Episode IX. That makes sense, given it's the end of the Skywalker Saga, and Mark Hamill will return one last time to see out the journey he started way back in 1977.

The most logical way for Luke to appear would be as a Force Ghost, which, although hasn't been confirmed, has been strongly speculated upon, while there have also been rumours that we'll see both Luke and Leia in further flashback scenes with a young Ben Solo.

That adds up to Luke having a decent-sized role in the movie, befitting it being the end of the saga that shares his name. Recent comments from Hamill, however, have instead led to talk that his role in Episode IX might amount to little more than a cameo appearance. The actor said in an interview with Den of Geek: "I thought: oh, okay, you should push my death off to the last one. That’s what I was hoping when I came back: no cameos and a run-of-the-trilogy contract. Did I get any of those things? Because as far as I’m concerned, the end of VII is really the beginning of VIII. I got one movie! They totally hornswoggled (tricked) me."

The idea of Luke's death coming in Episode IX fits with what's previously been reported of George Lucas' plans, but it's the fact Hamill says he "got one movie" that suggests we're not going to be seeing very much of Luke in Episode IX.
