While Hamill's comments suggest he'll only have a cameo, there are other rumours that run counter to that, including the idea that he'll be appearing in flashbacks too.

As for what those flashbacks will entail, one of the most enticing pieces of scuttlebutt that's been doing the rounds is that we're going to see Luke training Leia in the ways of the Jedi. As per u/JediPaxis on Reddit, "Luke and Leia appear in multiple flashbacks, including at least one scene where Leia is being trained or is discussing Jedi training with Luke. The outcome of the training is uncertain."

In The Last Jedi, we finally got to see Leia use the Force properly, and the Expanded Universe had a lot of storylines around her training to become a Jedi under Luke's tutelage (and succeeding). Given how great it was seeing Luke and Leia together in VIII, it wouldn't be too much of a surprise if Abrams did want to have more scenes of the siblings in Episode IX.

The sticking point here is he doesn't have much to work with, since he'll be using repurposed footage from The Force Awakens (and there was nothing reported about a training sequence like this), which would necessitate a lot of CGI, something he might not be willing to do after Carrie Fisher's passing. A scene of them at the Jedi Academy before things go wrong, however, does feel not only possible, but even likely.
