Star Wars Episode VII: 10 Things It Can Do Better Than The Originals
8. Include Stronger Female Characters
It's not uncommon for science fiction movies to feature a male-dominated cast of characters - given that the target audience is primarly male it's perhaps inevitable that women are poorly represented - and the Star Wars movies are no exception to this unfortunate rule. In fact, over the span of six movies there have only been eight named female characters appearing in the Star Wars universe, and of these only Princess Leia can be considered as fully developed (try naming and describing the other seven and you'll see just how bad the situation is when it comes to gender bias). With Carrie Fisher reprising her role as Leia in Episode VII, the only other actress playing a central role is Daisy Ridley, and while it remains to be seen just how prominent - and well rounded - her character will turn out, it's looking likely that the latest installment will pass the Bechdel Test with flying colours.
