Star Wars Episode VII: 10 Things It Can Do Better Than The Originals
5. Fill In The Plot Holes
Just as the Death Star's Achilles Heel is something that could have been replaced with something altogether more plausible, so too are there a few plot holes scattered throughout the original trilogy which should have been filled in along with the Death Star's thermal exhaust port. From the fact that Vader doesn't find Luke despite the fact he's living on his home planet with his relatives, to Yoda somehow managing to train Luke up to the status of full Jedi in the time it takes Han Solo to fly to Bespin, there are a few plot holes which really should have been addressed at the writing stage. At the very least this might have stopped nitpickers from questioning why Ben Kenobi doesn't recognise R2-D2 and C-3PO in Star Wars, despite the fact he spent so much time with them in the prequels. While these plot holes don't really detract from the pleasure of viewing the original series (if they bother you that much then you're probably taking them way too seriously), if Episode VII can avoid similar pitfalls the result will be a more believable and engaging story.
