6. Avoid The Family Relationship (With A Hint Of Incest) Twists

One of the most iconic moments from The Empire Strikes Back - if not the entire original trilogy - was the moment when - SPOILER ALERT! - Darth Vader announced to Luke that he is his father. It was a truly great twist that no one saw coming. Unfortunately Lucas had to take things one step further and spring on audiences another family-related revelation in Return Of The Jedi, when we discovered that Luke and Leia are actually twins. It felt completely unnecessary and kind of made the series feel like a bad soap opera, not to mention making audiences reflect on previous events and feel a little perturbed by the incestuous subtext. Fortunately the chances of Episode VII utilising a similar device is pretty slim - even Lucas wasn't stupid enough to attempt something similar with the prequels.
