Star Wars Episode VII: 10 Things It Can Do Better Than The Originals
4. Up The Ante With The Visual Effects
If there's one thing you can say about the original Star Wars trilogy it's that the visual effects have, for the most part, stood the test of time. Industrial Light and Magic's pioneering effects work - and the incredible design work done on the creatures and vehicles - still impresses even today. There are, however, a few scenes which look more than a little dated, and with today's technology these glitches can be easily rectified. While it might seem like it's stating the obvious that a contemporary film will inevitably look much better than something as old as these, plenty of films have been released in the interim which don't quite match up to the original trilogy. Fortunately, Episode VII hasn't gone down the almost entirely CGI route George Lucas took for the prequels (where it was painfully obvious in many scenes that the actors were simply standing against a green screen), so with a greater emphasis on the practical-oriented effects of the originals combined with new technological advances there's every reason to believe it will be the best looking Star Wars movie so far.
