9. The Force Awakens

The Force Awakens was a solid start to the sequel trilogy. As with most of the franchise, it's a visually stunning and technically brilliant movie, and amongst the great scenery we were also presented with some interesting new characters, such as Adam Driver's Kylo Ren, John Boyega's Finn, and Daisy Ridley's Rey. And let's not forget the re-introduction of old faces, like Han Solo, Leia and Chewbacca, all raring to go for some more intergalactic conflicts and tension-ridden adventures.

Rey's introduction was enchanting and promising, Kylo proves right away to be a formidable new villain, and Finn's AWOL soldier arc is clever and fresh.

Sure, there are a few narrative bumps - mainly Luke's absense and weird cliff-hanger of a return - but as far as Star Wars films go this has got all fans would want. Han's death, whilst shocking, also remains a stellar narrative move, giving to the audience one hell of a shock and setting up the threat of Kylo Ren and the First Order on an epic scale.

It's a shame the sequels never fully lived up to the opportunities The Force Awakens created, but its own right Episode VII remains a great sci-fi flick.
