4. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The best of Disney's recent Star Wars adventures is the way the franchise should be. Really, it has it all; the characters are (mostly) fully-realised, the visuals (as ever) are seamless, and the action is fast paced and fantastically intense. The true achievement of Rogue One is none of these things, however, as that honour goes to the unconventional plot.

Following Rogue One - a Rebel group led Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) - as they mount a daring mission to retrieve the Death Star plans, the film's climax takes place mere minutes before A New Hope, showing fans how the Rebellion got the plans in the first place; the same plans which led to Luke Skywalker destroying the Death Star during the Battle of Yavin.

Sure, it might look ridiculous to make an entire film around one little detail like that, but thanks to the direction of Gareth Edwards and some great performances from Jones, Luna, Ben Mendelsohn and Alan Tudyk, the film feels less like a cash-grab, and more like a carefully drawn insight into the world fans have come to love.

It's at once fun, bleak and hopeful, and it's everything you want from a Star Wars adventure.
