19. The Star Wars Holiday Special

Where to begin with The Star Wars Holiday Special? Nowhere good, unfortunately.

Released in 1978 and directed by Steve Binder, the Special did only one semi-decent thing by introducing audiences to Boba Fett. Aside from that, everything was a disaster. Set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, the spin-off sees Han Solo (Harrison Ford) accompany Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) back to Kashyyyk for his planet's "Life Day." En route, the duo are pursued by Imperial agents and must evade capture.

Everything after that manages to get even worse, introducing us to Chewbacca's wife, Malla, and father, Itchy - characters who really shouldn't exist. Much of the film is made from old footage from A New Hope, and the cast from the original classic actually return to their roles. Hilariously, Kenny Baker, who plays R2-D2, isn't credited; instead, R2 is credited as "Himself." Maybe Baker saw the problem...

Oh, and Leia sings.

Ultimately, the Special is not very special. In fact, the only thing it has going for it in terms of fame and legacy is the fact that it's never been released on DVD (since it was so panned) and it makes the other films in the franchise look even better in comparison.
