Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge - 10 Big Reveals About Disney's Upcoming Land
5. The Rides Are A Mix Of Digital And Practical
There is this kind of weird revolution taking place in the theme park industry right now and it's begun inciting its own controversy over the last few years. The use of screens in an attraction has almost become a bad word, and though the rides in Galaxy's Edge do utilize screens and projections, they are very obviously not solely reliant upon this tech.
It's easy to understand why theme parks are turning more and more to screens. It's cheaper, requires less maintenance, and it's faster to make. But there is also the downside of it occasionally cheapening the experience and making it all feel like just a bad movie. Universal Studios has, notably, become pretty bad about this, with recent attractions like Skull Island: Reign of Kong and the especially heinous Fast & Furious - Supercharged being lowlights.
But thankfully, Galaxy's Edge is using the screens as they should be used: as an assist to practical work. The world of Batuu is remarkably fleshed out through practical effects work, as are the rides. The first room in Rise of the Resistance is a life-size recreation of a First Order hangar bay with multiple to-scale TIE Fighters.
So fear not, there will be tactile thrills for all to experience.
