Star Wars: Ranking Every Major Death From Worst To Best
9. Luke Skywalker
The Death: Luke Skywalker perishes in The Last Jedi after transmitting a hologram of himself across the galaxy to confuse Kylo Ren and allow the Resistance to escape the clutches of the First Order once again.
Ranking Explained: Fans had waited and waited to see Luke back on the big screen. He appeared as a child in Revenge of the Sith but J.J. Abrams’ decision to hold him back for The Force Awakens meant many were expecting big things from the Jedi-turned-hermit when The Last Jedi came along two years later.
And Luke, though different, makes for fascinating viewing. The son of Darth Vader is no longer the happy, cheery young man seen back in the 1970s and 1980s, with Kylo’s turn to the dark side seeing him duck out of the battle against the First Order and take refuge away from the action instead.
But his death is rather confusing: It takes a second watch of the Last Jedi to understand that the power of transmitting images across the universe is enough to kill you, and the decision to pit Luke in hologram form against Kylo leaves fans with a sense of longing. An epic showdown between Skywalker and his nephew would have been great – if Luke had actually been there.
