Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker - Everything It Gets Wrong

9. ANOTHER Skybeam?!

Go-to "final set-piece" of every big budget film this decade, everything from The Avengers to Suicide Squad, Ghostbusters to Big Hero 6 has an arbitrary "giant sky beam".

It can be anything - spectral energy, a giant weapon that needs stopping - but for whatever reason, Hollywood has decided that oversized beams of light are terrifying and imposing, thus even Star Wars is reduced to doing the exact same thing.

Coming after Palpatine achieves unlimited power after sucking the life force from Rey and Kylo (as you do), he fires a ginormous blast of lightning up into the sky, taking out half the rebel's armada in seconds.

It's a neat enough visual, but Abrams playing it safe with yet another expected element was thoroughly lame.
