Star Wars Rogue One: 10 Major Questions We Still Have
9. So What About Those Reshoots?
Whilst the D-Day for Rogue One is nearing, there was a time where the whole film seemed in trouble. Earlier this year the film began reshoots despite production having already wrapped. Was there bad news for the next instalment of the Star Wars saga? Felicity Jones told the Hollywood Reporter:
"Obviously when you come to the edit, you see the film come together and you think, ‘Actually, we could do this better, and this would make more sense if we did this’. I’ve done it so many times. I mean, you wouldn’t just give your first draft on this story, would you?"
Whereas J.J. Abrams had some free reign on his creations and storyline, Edwards was restricted to what came before and after. Slotting in between two of the most infamous movies in the Star Wars timeline is no mean feat, and getting it right is important to all involved.
Where Rogue One started as a Saving Private Ryan war epic, it became bogged down in its gritty action. It was the same story for this years maligned Suicide Squad - which was still criticised despite reshoots - and both films underwent reshoots to lighten the mood.
Instead of fearing the worst, we should look to the positives and see the reshoots as a good thing. At least the production crew had the foresight to think "we can do this better!" Whilst we will probably never know was was cut or reshot, ask yourself, "If I can't tell, does it really matter?"
