Star Wars: Rogue One Vs Solo - Which Is Better?

11. Core Narrative

Rogue One Solo

Both anthology films thus far have gotten a lot of flak from certain fans for their narratives being "unnecessary" additions to the Star Wars continuity. However, if anything, the stories of both Rogue One and Solo add some much-needed moral ambiguity to the Star Wars saga, seeing as how the classic "good versus evil" formula the series was originally built around has started to wear a bit thin.

In addition to being an incredibly heartfelt tale of how a ragtag group of rebels made the ultimate sacrifice to steal the Death Star plans and give the Rebel Alliance at large a fighting chance at defeating the Empire, Rogue One has a lot of unique conflicts. At its core, it is still a story of good versus evil, but the film also features plenty shades of gray. Between Cassian Andor's regrets and Saw Gerrera's extremism, Rogue One is a true-to-life war story that shows how even the "good guys" may sometimes find themselves doing things they aren't proud of.

Meanwhile, Solo's main narrative is one based almost entirely around moral relativism. It's a story of a street criminal from Corellia teaming up with a group of professional thieves to rob people even worse than them. Yes, Han's true colors as a hero do shine through every so often, but at the end of the day, Solo is very much a story of someone who is simply doing what he can to survive.

Winner: Rogue One and Solo feel like Star Wars stories that were truly worth telling and both help blur the lines between good and evil. But the high, all-or-nothing stakes of Rogue One's story do make it more enthralling that Solo's heist-centric plot. Rogue One takes this point.
