Star Wars: Solo - 10 New Details Lucasfilm Just Revealed
8. Tobias Beckett And Val
Woody Harrelson seems like a perfect fit for the Star Wars universe, and especially the role he's taking on here: a criminal and Han Solo's mentor, who goes by the name of Tobias Beckett.
We didn't see too much of him in the trailer, but we do see that he's a crucial element in bringing all of the key players together, using the old trope of "putting together a crew" that includes Han, Chewie, Lando, and Qi'ra.
According to director Ron Howard, Beckett "shapes Han really more than anybody, as Han comes to realise that in a lawless time he needs to try to come to terms with some kind of moral code," and that he is "such a charismatic character."
That last part comes as standard with Harrelson really, who should be more than able of balancing the tough criminal aspects of the character with someone who still manages to be sympathetic as a parent figure to our hero.
Thandie Newton's Val was only briefly glimpsed in the trailer, but she'll have an important part to play in the movie. According to Kathleen Kennedy, she and Beckett have been partners a long-time and, as suspected, that's how she meets Han Solo. Jon Kasdan says:
"She’s a little skeptical of this kid when she meets him. And her relationship with him goes in, I think, an … interesting direction.”
